Earthing Tip

There should be proper Earthing for proper functioning of the Computers. The recomended voltages are
Phase to Neutral 230 Volts(+ / - 1%)
Phase to Earth 230 Volts(+ / - 1%)
Neutral to Earth between 0 and 2 Volts(It should be greater than 0)

SMPS TESTING

To check if the SMPS is OK, we should short the green wire pin of the SMPS with any of the Black wire pin and power ON the SMPS, if the SMPS gets ON (FAN will start moving) then the SMPS is OK else it is faulty.

MOTHERBOARD TESTING

To Check if the Motherborad is OK,Beep sound should come after RAM has been removed from the Motherboard and system has been powered ON. If there is no beep sound Motherboard is faulty.

BOOTP Configuration

A protocol used primarily on TCP/IP networks to configure diskless workstations. When the client machines do not have the harddisks for storing the operating systems, either the floppy or the network interface LAN card(have the program to detect the server and boot from the same) are used to boot the computer and the program in that detects the BOOTP server to obtain the IP Address. DHCP works on the machines having the harddisk and the operating system is loaded into the memory. But BOOTP doesnot require the Harddisk in the computer and the OPerating system is loaded from the server by obtaining the IP Address through the BOOTP process.

DHCP Server

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a computer networking protocol used by hosts (DHCP clients) to retrieve IP Address assignments and other configuration information.

DHCP uses a Client Server architecture. The client sends a broadcast request for configuration information. The DHCP server receives the request and responds with configuration information from its configuration database. The client gets the IP Address, subnet mask to be used, the default gateway for the network minimally. The proxy server information also can be passed on to the client from the DHCP Server. The lease period can be decided based on the individual requirement and after the lease period is over, the IP Address is released to the IP Pool and reassigned to the same/different machine based on the requirement.

Phising attacks on the net

One interesting and fast-growing species of Internet fraud is phishing. Phishing attacks use email messages and web sites designed to look as if they come from a known and legitimate organization, in order to deceive users into disclosing personal, financial, or computer account information. The attacker can then use this information for criminal purposes, such as identity theft, larceny, or fraud. Users are tricked into disclosing their information either by providing it through a web form or by downloading and installing hostile software. A phishing attack succeeds when a user is tricked and made to fill in the details onthe online interaction screen looking similar to the original site. Because inferring a user's intentions can be difficult, building an automated system to protect users from phishing attacks is a challenging problem.

For information on avoiding get attacked or to report Phishing attacks, please refer to the site.

DNS vs WINS

What is the difference between WINS Server and DNS Server?

WINS Server provides the facility to use the NETBIOS name of the computer for accessing the resources than using the IP addresses. The WINS service can be within domain/workgroup network.  This service is basically used within the LAN environment only.

DNS Server is the server which is providing the public internet IP address to URL name resolution in the internet world. This server running at the Internet Service provider's network converts the human readable url address that we type in the internet browser into the IP addresses and provides access to the required internet web site or the server. The DNS server has the forward and reverse entries meaning the name to IP address and IP address to Name resolution entries for its functioning in an efficient way.

Unable to boot when USB harddisk is connected

We have attached USB harddisk for taking backup of data in Operating offices. But in some offices we find that the server is not booting when the USB is attached. It is not booting even when we upgraded the operating system. It works only when we remove it and subsequently connect it upon booting. But this creates other problems which operating offices cannot troubleshoot. Is there any solution to this problem?
