When you have more number of machines in different floors/ buildings, then machines in each floor are connected to individual switches without any interconnectivity between these switches. Otherwise it will become a single LAN. However virtual LAN is created within a single switch or across all switches connected with each other ina single LAN for creating the groups between the users. Switches with Layer2 capabilities only support Virtual LANs. In virtual LAN, group of machines in a single switch or multiple switches across the floor/building can be grouped to become a virtual LAN. By using the virtual LAN, the network traffic is controlled by eliminating the broadcast packet being transmitted to all the switch ports in the entire network. This helps in saving the LAN Bandwidth.
