A software service that dynamically maps IP addresses to computer names (NetBIOS names), similar to the DNS server in the internet. This allows users to access resources by name instead of requiring them to use IP addresses that are difficult to recognize and remember. Otherwise these netbios names and ip address details have to be configured in the LMhosts files in each of the computer. Using WINS server, it is required to configure these details only in the central server and the client machines obtain the resolution details from the server itself.
