Switches are classified as Layer 2 or Layer 3 switch based on the intelligence built into them. Normally L2 switch works with the MAC addresses and have no knowledge of how to process the data based on IP Addresses. L3 switches have these capabilities and can be used like a router within the large LAN in the campus having hundreds of computers with different IP Address segments.
