Port Forwarding

In our home network setup, for broadband Internet connection we use DSL modem. This modem also acts as Router and DHCP Server for our network. When we connect to the Internet, this DSL router gets actual 'Public IP address' and the DHCP Server (which is the same equipment in this case) provides 'Private IP Address' to the connected computer, and therefore our computer becomes 'invisible' for external world. This situation is good for security purpose because no one from external world can directly access (or hack) our home computer. But for many reasons we require direct access to our home computer from external world, such as :

1) We want to access our home computer from office through RAdmin, Remote login, SSL, FTP etc.

2) We want to run HTTP Server, and Host our own website on home machine.

The solution is "Port Forwarding". Using this configuration on DSL Router, we get Public IP Address directly on our home machine and make the machine visible for external world.

Clean your Computer ! ! !

If our computer is working fine we never bother to open the cabinet (n why should we?), and the result is - motherboard is covered with dust or spiderweb. During the rainy seasons these dust/spiderweb may absorb moisture and act like electric conductor. Current leaks through these conductors causing short-circuiting the motherboard components. The overall result is – your computer may hang or stop working at all.

Therefore, it is recommended to open your computer (cabinet) once in every six months and clean the dust/spiderweb with blower. ( Be careful not to damage any hardware components.)

Slow Computers.

To speed up your computer you must first identify why the computer is slow. Your computer may be slow because of the following reasons:

1) Hardware problem.
2) Heavy Security.
3) Slow Applications.
4) Slow server.

1) If the computer is slow because of Hardware problem you can call H/w Engineer to fix it up.

2) Sometimes antivirus programs like McAfee takes lots of memory and your computer becomes slow because of low memory. Press Ctr+Alt+Del go to "Task Manager" and then go to "Processes" , here you can see which program is taking how much memory and CPU utilization. If any program is taking too much memory or CPU utilization you can "End" that process or 'Set lower priority' for that process.

3) The application program in which you are working may be slow or sometimes it takes lots of memory (games, etc.) - > increase your RAM / check software documentation for Hardware requirements.

4)If your application program is waiting for any server activity and the server itself is slow then naturally your application program will be slow and you may feel that your computer is slow. If you are using oracle application and your application is slow or sometimes hangs because your oracle server is slow, then you can try at least following on server–

"Press Ctr+Alt+Del go to "Task Manager" and then go to "Processes" tab, right click on oracle.exe and Set Priority – "High".

Earthing Tip

There should be proper Earthing for proper functioning of the Computers. The recomended voltages are
Phase to Neutral 230 Volts(+ / - 1%)
Phase to Earth 230 Volts(+ / - 1%)
Neutral to Earth between 0 and 2 Volts(It should be greater than 0)

SMPS TESTING

To check if the SMPS is OK, we should short the green wire pin of the SMPS with any of the Black wire pin and power ON the SMPS, if the SMPS gets ON (FAN will start moving) then the SMPS is OK else it is faulty.

MOTHERBOARD TESTING

To Check if the Motherborad is OK,Beep sound should come after RAM has been removed from the Motherboard and system has been powered ON. If there is no beep sound Motherboard is faulty.

BOOTP Configuration

A protocol used primarily on TCP/IP networks to configure diskless workstations. When the client machines do not have the harddisks for storing the operating systems, either the floppy or the network interface LAN card(have the program to detect the server and boot from the same) are used to boot the computer and the program in that detects the BOOTP server to obtain the IP Address. DHCP works on the machines having the harddisk and the operating system is loaded into the memory. But BOOTP doesnot require the Harddisk in the computer and the OPerating system is loaded from the server by obtaining the IP Address through the BOOTP process.

DHCP Server

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a computer networking protocol used by hosts (DHCP clients) to retrieve IP Address assignments and other configuration information.

DHCP uses a Client Server architecture. The client sends a broadcast request for configuration information. The DHCP server receives the request and responds with configuration information from its configuration database. The client gets the IP Address, subnet mask to be used, the default gateway for the network minimally. The proxy server information also can be passed on to the client from the DHCP Server. The lease period can be decided based on the individual requirement and after the lease period is over, the IP Address is released to the IP Pool and reassigned to the same/different machine based on the requirement.

Phising attacks on the net

One interesting and fast-growing species of Internet fraud is phishing. Phishing attacks use email messages and web sites designed to look as if they come from a known and legitimate organization, in order to deceive users into disclosing personal, financial, or computer account information. The attacker can then use this information for criminal purposes, such as identity theft, larceny, or fraud. Users are tricked into disclosing their information either by providing it through a web form or by downloading and installing hostile software. A phishing attack succeeds when a user is tricked and made to fill in the details onthe online interaction screen looking similar to the original site. Because inferring a user's intentions can be difficult, building an automated system to protect users from phishing attacks is a challenging problem.

For information on avoiding get attacked or to report Phishing attacks, please refer to the site.

DNS vs WINS

What is the difference between WINS Server and DNS Server?

WINS Server provides the facility to use the NETBIOS name of the computer for accessing the resources than using the IP addresses. The WINS service can be within domain/workgroup network.  This service is basically used within the LAN environment only.

DNS Server is the server which is providing the public internet IP address to URL name resolution in the internet world. This server running at the Internet Service provider's network converts the human readable url address that we type in the internet browser into the IP addresses and provides access to the required internet web site or the server. The DNS server has the forward and reverse entries meaning the name to IP address and IP address to Name resolution entries for its functioning in an efficient way.

Unable to boot when USB harddisk is connected

We have attached USB harddisk for taking backup of data in Operating offices. But in some offices we find that the server is not booting when the USB is attached. It is not booting even when we upgraded the operating system. It works only when we remove it and subsequently connect it upon booting. But this creates other problems which operating offices cannot troubleshoot. Is there any solution to this problem?

Kaaza.com virus

In the recent time, we have seen in our offices that the WAN links are being used to the fullest level and actual business applications could not get any bandwidth for its use. Based onthe analysis, we found that  a virus called Kaaza.com which is sharing the folders across the wan links randomly and start transfering the files in GBs. Hence the entire WAN link becomes choked.

In order to overcome this problem, other than removing the virus, it is advised to put the Access controls in the rourter also which will disallow such a type of traffic. On specific authentic request we may be able to share the Access controls.

Broadcast packets in WAN link

Normally the bandwidth LAN in is very high such as 100MBps or 1000MBps. However in case of Leased lines, the bandwidth is very small due to the cost involved in procuring the same. Hence in order to overcome these issues, the routers will not allow the broadcast packets to enter the WAN link. Due to this the WAN link is used for the actual application and put into the actual use. If Broadcast packets enter the router's WAN link then the link will become very slow.

Ping not responding

With the latest versions of Microsoft operating Systems, microsoft has blocked all the ports and opened the ports which are minimally required for the system to work through the firewall in the OS itself. Hence after installing the Windows XP /Vista machines connected to the network, we may not be able to ping these machines from other machines. To overcome this problem, in the windows firewall, "Advanced" tab select "Local Area Network" and setting adjacent to it. This will open another window and select "ICMP" tab, select the required options from the list. Similarly, you may enable your programs in the computer to be allowed by firewall to connect to internet or other machines by specifying the same inthe "Services" here.
